The Young Naturalists Club (YNC), in partnership with Keshen Goodman Library, completed a Youth-Led Naturalization Garden for Birds and Pollinators adjacent to a riparian and forested area behind the library. The project engaged youth, families, and community members in hands-on habitat restoration, planting native flowers and shrubs to enhance bird and pollinator habitat while increasing awareness of urban wildlife and biodiversity. Participants also took part in informal citizen science and learned practical actions to support conservation in their own communities. Through this project, we:
Planted 49 native species
Engaged 39 + youth, parent and volunteer participants
Hosted 3 informational booths (NatureNS, Halifax Municipality, HRM Library)
Conducted a bioblitz recording 20+ species and 88+ individuals
Installed feather-friendly tape on one window
The Young Naturalists Club would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Nova Scotia Habitat Conservation Fund for supporting our work. This fund plays a vital role in protecting and enhancing wildlife habitats across the province.
The Habitat Conservation Fund is supported by hunters, trappers, and generous donors, helping to conserve Nova Scotia’s forests, wetlands, and other natural areas for wildlife and people alike. Through their contributions, projects like ours can grow, giving youth hands-on opportunities to explore nature, learn about local ecosystems, and develop a lifelong connection to the environment
