The Young Naturalists Club (YNC) is excited to bring back our bat box stewardship project in 2026 after helping install nearly 50 bat boxes across Nova Scotia in 2020-2021. With support from the Nova Scotia Habitat Conservation Fund, this project gives youth and families the opportunity to take part in hands-on conservation and citizen science while learning about Nova Scotia’s bats and the challenges they face.
From Spring to Fall 2026, YNC families will be:
Installing bat boxes across the province
Monitoring bat activity
Learning about and engaging in citizen science and stewardship
Canadian Wildlife Federation:
Citizen science and monitoring resources:

Our YNC families are awesome citizen scientists! Over 2020-2021, four of our chapters collaborated on a stewardship project for at-risk bats, building 50 bat boxes and monitoring our neighbourhoods for signs of bat activity. We wanted to share what we learned so that other families could be good bat stewards! Download our printable Guide to Bat Monitoring and become a citizen scientist today!
The Young Naturalists Club would like to acknowledge that this project was made possible by the Nova Scotia Habitat Conservation Fund. Thanks to them and their supporters, the YNC can offer fun and engaging projects that provide hands-on conservation initiatives for youth and families.
The Young Naturalists Club would like to acknowledge the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute as a valuable partner, offering guidance, support and expertise throughtout the project.
